Retired Nigerian footballer, Sunny Kingsley has expressed his thoughts on the ongoing “Game On” tournament, Festac edition.
A two days tournament involving four teams, “Game On” is staged regionally.
According to Kingsley, it is a platform that bred a number of former Nigerian stars including Sunday Oliseh and Victor Agali. Players who went on to achieve notable success in the football world.
“This is ‘Game On’ Festac and we are where everything began. We all started here,” he told Sports247.
“Big-time players like Sunday Oliseh, Victor Agali, national team players they all started here. They played here.
“We know the condition of the pitch but we feel the love of the people of Festac. They are football lovers and we brought Game On here to show the people and the young footballers we have today that if they can play here, they can play anywhere else in the world.”
Kingsley went further to outline the essence of ‘Game On’. He says that the aim is to create awareness of grassroots football and help teams and coaches understand their main purpose which is talent development.
“The objectives of Game On is to create awareness to grassroots football first and foremost. And help academies to understand each other to know that they are doing the same thing which is player development.
“We see what’s going on in Nigeria where people think they are into competition of sending players abroad but the idea is to help them know that we can work together as academies, as coaches, and as football teams.
“We can come together and do seminars and do coach development programs. And in the end, help player development in the grassroots.”
