Abuja, Nigeria – The 63rd Nigeria Independence Anniversary Golf tournament concluded in grand fashion on Sunday night, as Philip Joe Poroma from the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, emerged as the overall victor.

This prestigious golf event, which kicked off the previous Monday, saw over 500 participants vying for honors in different categories.
Philip Joe Poroma, a handicapped 14 amateur golfer, displayed his prowess by carding an impressive 80 gross with a net score of 66. His outstanding performance propelled him to outplay a formidable field and claim the coveted trophy.
Poroma’s victory also earned him the prestigious green jacket, and the ultimate prize – a PAN car.
In a jubilant statement, the elated winner expressed his joy at clinching the title. He credited his hard work and dedication while dedicating the trophy to Nigeria, his beloved country.
Poroma commended all the participants for their resilience and determination, acknowledging that in golf, only one player can emerge victorious.
The grand finale of the Independence Golf Tournament was graced by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, who emphasized the significance of golf as a beloved sport.
He lauded the passion, commitment, and consistency of the club for hosting this prestigious event, highlighting the role of sports in fostering social inclusiveness, diplomatic relations between countries, friendship, and business networks.
Results from the inter-countries match-play contests showcased Nigeria’s prowess on the golf course.
The Nigerian team triumphed over Uganda with a score of 8.5 to 6.5 in the double match-play and secured a resounding victory against Cameroon with 15.5 to 3.5 in the singles.
The host nation also dominated the double match-play, triumphing over Ghana with a score of 13.5 to 3.5, and secured another victory in the singles with a score of 19.5 to 10.5.
Dr. Olabanjo Obaleye, the host Captain, expressed his gratitude to all who contributed to the tournament’s success.
He praised the organizing committee and sponsors and noted that this year’s tournament marked a significant milestone with a record number of participating foreign countries.
