In a bold move aimed at rejuvenating the squad, the Nigeria Customs Service Volleyball Club (NCS VC) has named national team player Philip Akande as captain ahead of the 2025 Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League.
Akande’s appointment was confirmed in a statement signed by the Head of Sports at the Nigeria Customs Service, Samuel Onikeku, following an intensive two-week trial that saw 18 players selected to represent the service in this year’s campaign.

He will be supported by Emmanuel Udah as 1st vice-captain and Princewill Okoh as 2nd vice-captain. Meanwhile, Godfrey Isaac and Usman Ado have been named team coordinators.
The leadership reshuffle comes after the team failed to secure a podium finish in the previous edition of the league, prompting the need for a fresh direction. Onikeku explained that the changes were necessary due to the retirement and coaching transitions of several key players who previously led the team to multiple titles — including three national league championships and a historic Super Cup win in Lagos.
“We believe that their [Akande, Udah, and Okoh’s] appointment will usher in a new beginning for the men’s team and enable them to compete for the trophy this season,” said Onikeku.
He praised the outgoing leadership for their contributions and charged the new squad to uphold the values of the Customs Service.
“To the selected players, I want to implore you to give your best to the team, and make the service proud,” he added.
The NCS VC is gearing up to bounce back stronger this season, with high hopes that the new leadership will restore the team’s dominance in Nigerian volleyball.
