Paul Onuachu scored his first goal of the season to help KRC Genk defeat KV Oostende 2-1 away from home in the Belgian top flight on Saturday, reports Sports247.ng.
Onuachu missed Genk’s first two games of the season with an abductor injury. On August 6, he was named to the bench against KAS Eupen but did not play. He came off the bench in the next four league games.
The Nigerian forward has returned to full fitness and started Genk’s final two games before the international break without scoring. He has now opened his goal account for the season with an equalizer against Oostende on Saturday evening.
Oostende took the lead after only three minutes thanks to a Fraser Hornby strike. Genk had a chance to equalize five minutes later when they were awarded a penalty kick, but midfielder Mike Ndayishimiye missed from twelve yards out.
In the 25th minute, Onuachu scored after a nice team move to tie the game for the visitors. Angelo Preciado assisted him. The first half ended 1-1.
Genk dominated possession for large stretches of the second half. In the 88th minute, Daniel Munoz headed from a corner kick to give Genk the victory. Onuachu lasted the duration of the game.
With the victory, Genk increased their point total after 10 games to 25, placing them second in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League standings. The Smurfs’ next league game will be at home against K.V. Kortrijk on Saturday, October 8.
