KRC Genk Nigerian striker, Paul Onuachu has scooped the 2021 Ebony Shoe award in Belgium.
The towering striker saw off competition from Club Brugge’s Clinton Mata (Angola) and his club teammate Theo Bongonda (DR Congo) to win the prize.
The Ebony Shoe is an annual award given to the best African player or player with African roots in the Belgian Pro League.
Onuachu was recognized with the accolade for his stunning 2020/21 campaign where he scored 33 league goals in 38 games to help Genk to a second-place finish.
He becomes the fifth Nigerian to win the award, following in the footsteps of Daniel Amokachi (1992 & 1994), Victor Ikpeba (1993), Godwin Okpara (1995), and Celestine Babayaro (1996).
Amokachi is the first player to have won the award in 1992. He is also the only Nigerian to have won the award more than once.
Onuachu’s eye-catching displays also saw him win the 2020-21 Belgian League Player of the Year and winner of the Golden Boot award. The 27-years old has been heavily linked with a move away from Genk on the back of his exceptional year.
