Super Eagles coordinator, Patrick Pascal has opined that one major reason why home-based players have not found regular spots in the national team is because the calendar of the domestic championship, Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is ‘irregular.’
Pascal said in a chat with sports247.ng that, for domestic players to be called regularly to the national team, organizers of the Nigerian league must make sure the calendar the same as applies in Europe.
The former left-back of Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Wikki Tourist of Bauchi added that, while foreign-based players are busy playing at their various clubs, those at home are resting on holiday.
Pacal, who was a member of Nigeria’s gold medal winning team at Atlanta ’96 Olympics, noted further that when those plying their trade abroad are on holiday at the end of their seasons, home-based players are still in action, because the domestic league is on.
He posited: “I am sure that once the LMC can make sure that the Nigerian league season can run concurrently with others across the world, domestic players will surely have time in the national team.”
