Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, attributed his team’s defeat against Spain in the 2024 Olympic Games to poor finishing.
The match in Nantes saw the reigning world champions Spain narrowly beat the Super Falcons 1-0. This defeat marked the tournament’s second consecutive loss for the Nigerian team.

Despite being on the back foot for most of the game, the Super Falcons created several scoring opportunities.
However, their inability to convert these chances ultimately cost them the match. Waldrum pointed out that the team’s poor marksmanship was a critical factor in the loss.
Waldrum expressed optimism despite the loss, noting that the Super Falcons were able to match the reigning world champions for significant portions of the game.
He stressed that the team needs to improve their finishing and maintain concentration throughout the match to compete at the highest level.
Reflecting on the match, Waldrum said, “Obviously, you would like to win with results at the end of the day, but I think our performance was very positive.
We were very good in the attacking phase, our possession was good. I thought it was a much better performance than we had in the World Cup against them.”
He added, “We created more chances against them than we did at the World Cup. I have seen a lot of improvement since the World Cup until now.”
Waldrum’s comments reveal the ongoing challenge the Super Falcons face in international competitions, where precision and efficiency in front of goal are very important.
The coach also acknowledged the absence of key players due to injuries, which has been a significant setback for the team.
The Super Falcons will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next match, hoping to turn around their fortunes in the ongoing Olympics.
This recent performance and analysis from the coach give hope to the team and their supporters that they are on the right track despite the setbacks.
