As the Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, prepares for their highly anticipated match against the United States in Paris later today, head coach Rena Wakama expresses her confidence and excitement.
“We want to play the best of the best,” Wakama stated, highlighting the team’s motivation and determination. “We want to shock the world as no one believes we are capable.”
Wakama, who credits her good looks to her mother, emphasizes the importance of sticking to the game plan, something that was not fully executed in their recent match against France, resulting in a significant loss.
“For us, every possession is valuable and important,” Wakama explained. “We need to defend at a high level, especially when it comes to rebounds, and keep the score close.”
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Wakama feels immense pride in being the first African woman to coach a team to the finals of the Olympics. “It feels great, and I am grateful to everyone who helped me get here,” she expressed.
The coach underscores the significance of persistence, discipline, and attention to detail as keys to success.
Despite facing difficult times, particularly in Antwerp where they had an eye-opening experience two months ago, Wakama remains confident. “Going into the game with confidence is crucial,” she noted.
The team has had a rigorous schedule, playing about five games, including three friendlies and three matches here.
Wakama acknowledges the positive impact of new additions to the team, particularly Ezinne, who brings another level of intensity and expertise. “The team is different now, and Team United States has not played this team,” Wakama pointed out, thanking the Nigerian Basketball Federation for their support.
As they prepare for their match against the formidable US team, Wakama expects her players to give their all.
“We have to take the game further for us,” she asserted. “Communication is key, and I expect them to stick to what we do best.”
Wakama’s leadership and strategic insights have been instrumental in guiding D’Tigress to this point. Her focus on the fundamentals and her belief in the team’s potential inspire hope and excitement as they look to make a mark on the international stage.
“The magic is in being persistent and disciplined, and doing the little things that matter,” Wakama concluded, ready to lead her team into battle.
