Paris 2024 Paralympics: Onyinyechi Wins Nigeria First Gold Medal, Marks A New World Record On Friday

Onyinyechi Mark has won Nigeria’s 1st GOLD medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics with a lift of 150kg to set a new world record in the 61kg Para Powerlifting on Friday Afternoon, Sports 247 reports.

The Power lifter broke the world record of 146 kg, she set at the 2023 World Championships in Dubai.

Mark’s lift outlifted her closest rival, with more than 10kg weight as China’s Cui Jianjin secured silver with a 140 kg lift, and Mexico’s Amalia Pérez, a four-time Paralympic champion, taking bronze with a lift of 130 kg.

Mark’s effort ensured that now three medals at the games comprising One Gold , One Silver and Bronze.

The world record solidifies Nigeria’s reputation as a power house in the Para Powerlifting as more medals and probably more records are still for the take by Nigerians in the event .
