From the start, Mariam Bolaji took control of the court, leveraging her agility and strategic play to keep Vinot on the defensive.
The first game saw Bolaji quickly establish dominance, ending with a commanding 21-8 victory. Despite Vinot’s attempts to regroup, the second game followed a similar pattern, with Bolaji securing a 21-14 win to close out the match.
This victory follows Bolaji’s earlier success against India’s Mandeep Kaur, where she also won in straight sets, 21-8, 21-14. Bolaji’s second win in the group stage further solidifies her position as a strong contender in the SL3 category, where athletes with standing/lower limb impairments compete.
With two victories under her belt, Bolaji now eyes a medal, setting her sights on advancing through the competition with the same relentless drive.
Bolaji’s success in Paris is a testament to her dedication and the growth of para-badminton in Nigeria.
“It’s been a journey of hard work and perseverance. I’m grateful for the support and the opportunity to represent my country on such a significant stage,” Bolaji remarked after her victory.
Céline Vinot, despite the loss, showed resilience and sportsmanship, acknowledging the challenges of facing a top-tier opponent like Bolaji. “Playing against Mariam was tough, but it’s an experience that motivates me to push harder in my training,” Vinot stated.
As the Paralympic Games continue, all eyes will be on Bolaji as she moves closer to a potential medal, with hopes high that she will bring home a victory for Nigeria.
