Sports247.ng reports that Nigeria’s outing at Paris 2024 was riddled with errors and controversies, top of which were the fishy exclusion of Favour Ofili from the women’s 100m.
There were also issues of a cyclist having to borrow a bicycle in order to compete and a row over kit between the ministry and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).
Subsequently, as the Games come to a close this weekend, with the Nigerian contingent failing to pick a single shade of medal, Senator Enoh may have to ponder over a recent ‘perform or quit order’ issued to all ministers by President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu gave the directive in his speech at the 2023 Cabinet Retreat For Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries And Top Government Functionaries, which Enoh is an integral part of.
Tinubu had declared back then, “If you are performing, there is nothing to fear. If you missed the objective, we review it.
“If (there is) no performance, you leave us. No one is an island, and the buck stops on my desk.”
Consequently, with Team Nigeria fumbling to an all-time low at Paris 2024, sports247.ng has scooped a dossier that analyses the pitfalls and concluded with a suggestion that the sports minister may have to resign.
The treatise stated in part: “Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh faces a significant challenge regarding Nigeria’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“The first step for Minister Enoh is to establish clear and measurable objectives for Nigeria’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics.
“A detailed strategic plan must be developed to achieve these objectives.
“Regular updates and evaluations will help in identifying potential issues early and adjusting strategies as needed.
“Ensure that athletes and coaches have access to the necessary resources and support.
“Maintain transparency in reporting the progress … (for which) regular updates to the public and stakeholders will be essential.
“If the performance falls short of the set objectives, it will be important to conduct a thorough review to understand the reasons behind it.
“The minister will have to present a clear plan for addressing the shortcomings and improving future performance.
“In line with President Tinubu’s statement, if there is a clear and consistent failure to meet objectives, despite reasonable efforts and strategic planning, the minister may need to consider resignation.”
