Today, ( Sunday 4 August 2024) is decisive for Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics as D’Tigress, Favour Ashe and Kanyinsola Ajayi battle for survival in their respective events.
It’s been a story of eliminations so far for Nigerians at the Paris 2024 Olympics with no Medals after 8 days of competitions at the Olympics.
The D’Tigress, Kanyinsola Ajayi and Favour Ashe seek to change the narrative as they are faced with the stark reality of elimination staring them in the face.
Ajayi who outran defending Olympic champion, Lamont Marcell Jacobs clocking 10.02s have hands full as he has loaded field of top sprinters to contend with in Semi Final 2 which include Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, South Africa’s Akani Simbine, USA’s Kenneth Bednarek, and defending champion Jacobs.
Ashe who barely qualified into the Semi Final has a chance to redeem his poor showing in the heat 4 where he finished in 10.16s in run in Semi Final 1 alongside USA’s Noah Lyles, Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, Great Britain’s Louie Hinchliffe, Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Ghana’s Benjamin Azamati, another loaded field for Ashe to contend in.
Ajayi and Ashe need to finish in either first or second in their races to have an automatic qualification into the finals or make the two final slots as the best two fastest losers.
The task is enormous no doubt but the fact that they are competing gives a survival chance to make it.
The 100 meter race will start by 7 pm , but before then, the Nigeria Women Basketball team D’Tigress will have known their fate as they face Canada at 12:30 pm.
The D’Tigress needed to defeat their Canadian counterpart and book a place in the Quarter Final for the first time ever in history.
The coach and the players admitted they needed to step up their game and do the needful after they started like a house on fire against Australia but dropped their ante against France losing 75-24 in their second game.
Meanwhile Favour Ofili will finally have her dream of participating at the Olympics come to reality as the Women 200 meter heats start today by 20:35 am on Sunday.
In the same vein, Childi Okezie and Samuel Ogazi will begin their quest at the Olympics in the men’s 400 meter race starting by 6 pm .
