Nigeria Para Powerlifting Federation (NPPF) technical director, Prince Feyisetan Are has disclosed that 53 lifters have commence a three-week training exercise for the International Para Powerlifting Championship, which is billed to hold from 24th to 31st January.
Sports247.ng gathered that Are will supervise the exercise, along with two assistant coaches, Patience Igbiti and Oluwakemi Gbadebo at Lagos National stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Feyisetan disclosed that athletes for the training exercise and camping were selected based on performances at the National Sports Festival in Abuja.
He added that new juniors and seniors discovered during the festival were also invited, in order to have replacements for aging ones.
He thanked the Ministry of Sports for making the exercise possible and supporting the NPPF, but urged corporate bodies to partner with the federation in sponsoring the national team for international events.
Are then expressed optimism of Nigeria carting away with the highest number of medals, which he said is based mostly on the country’s long history of achievements in such major competitions over the years.
He said: “We believe the championships will help us have standard powerlifting equipment and facilities.
“Because of our standard in the world, Nigeria will be able to win the highest number of medals.
“Currently, we have 53 Para Powerlifters in camp preparing for the International Championships in Lagos.
“The squad consists of 40 senior athletes, 20 male and 20 female, while the junior athletes are 13, 5 male and 8 female.”
