Oyo State Files Murder Charges Against Former Ooni Queen, Others Over Ibadan School Stampede

Nearly a month after the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed the lives of 35 children, the Oyo State government has charged the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, with murder.

Silekunola, alongside Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station, and the school principal, Abdullahi Fasasi, among others, faces charges related to their alleged roles in the December 18, 2024 incident.

The case, registered as I/05C/2025 and filed on Friday, January 10, lists the Oyo State government as the complainant and names the former queen and other individuals as defendants.

The government has leveled an 18-count charge against the defendants, including conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and other related offenses. These charges are punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
