Oyo and Delta States emerged as champions in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the highly anticipated 2023 BetKing 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball National Championship. The exhilarating tournament took place at the outdoor sports hall of the Alake Sports Center in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In the men’s division, Oyo State displayed their dominance by defeating Lagos State with a commanding scoreline of 10-1, securing the championship trophy. On the other hand, the women’s category witnessed a fiercely contested final, with Delta State emerging victorious after a hard-fought battle against Oyo State, triumphing with a close score of 3-2.
The tournament showcased exceptional talent and determination from all participating teams. Osun State demonstrated their resilience by staging a remarkable comeback, overcoming a three-point deficit to secure a 7-5 victory over Abuja and clinch the third position in the men’s category. Similarly, in the women’s division, Imo State delivered an impressive performance, overpowering Kwara State with a resounding 5-1 win, securing the third position.
Seyi Johnson, the President of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria, expressed his satisfaction with the competition and highlighted its significance. He emphasized that the event provided an opportunity for athletes to compete for the chance to represent Nigeria in the upcoming African Para Games in Ghana, scheduled for September. Johnson conveyed his commitment to reestablishing Nigeria’s prominent position in African wheelchair basketball and leaving a lasting legacy.
Looking ahead, Johnson stated that the national coaches are diligently monitoring the players and identifying areas for improvement. The ultimate goal is to prepare the team for the African Para Games and to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He expressed confidence in the potential of wheelchair basketball to bring pride and joy to Nigerian sports.
The winners in both categories were rewarded handsomely, with the championship teams receiving a prestigious trophy and a prize of N500,000. The first runners-up were awarded N300,000, while the second runners-up took home N200,000.
