Over 500 athletes from Team Delta have commenced closed camping as they prepare for the 8th edition of the National Youth Games, set to take place at the iconic Steven Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, from September 9 to 19.
This development was announced today by the Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, following the conclusion of over a month of open camping organized by the commission.
In addition to the athletes, over 200 officials have also entered the closed camp to enhance preparations for the upcoming games.
Mr. Ohwojero emphasized that the athletes have been urged to take their preparations seriously, warning that those who fail to perform could be replaced by other athletes who participated in the open camp.
He reminded the athletes that they are ambassadors of Delta State and must work diligently to ensure that Team Delta retains its top spot at the Youth Games.
The Director General acknowledged the significant investments made by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori towards the athletes’ welfare and preparations, stressing that the best way to show gratitude would be to successfully defend their title, as Team Delta has won the last seven editions of the games since its inception.
Mr. Ohwojero also called on the coaches and officials to approach their tasks with dedication, noting that they have the full backing of Governor Oborevwori to build a formidable team that would leave a lasting impression at the Youth Games. He assured parents that the safety, well-being, and development of their wards are being meticulously managed, and that the athletes are in safe hands.
As preparations intensify, the commitment from athletes, officials, and the state government is clear. Delta State aims not only to participate but to continue its dominance at the National Youth Games, ensuring that the legacy of excellence is upheld in Asaba.
