Over 100 players from within Nigeria and overseas are expected to participate in the 2019 Ex-Squash Pro in Diaspora Championship slated to hold at the squash courts of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos from November 14 to 16, the organisers have announced.
The tournament, put together by former professional squash players, is aimed at given back to the society and also revamping the game from the grassroots.
This year’s edition, which is the third in the series, promises to be exciting for all cadre of players, including U-13, U-16 and over 45 stars, who will battle for honours in the three-day event.
Speaking on the competition, Chairman, Ex-Squash Pro in Diaspora Championship, Femi Shittu said yesterday that the organisers had made the arrangement to ensure the success of this year’s edition of the event.
He disclosed that more former professional players have joined the group to put ideas together for the development of squash and meet the world standards.
“The competition started in 2017 with a few of us, but as the years went by, more and more former players are identifying with the cause to change the game for the better in Nigeria,” he said.
Shittu, who commended the Boye Oyerinde led Nigeria Squash Federation for the giant strides squash is recording in Nigeria, called on corporate bodies to support the programmes of the federation, which is to raise worthy ambassadors in the sport.
Shittu also added that former squash professionals in Diaspora had continued to produce talented players for the country’s national teams.
Winners of the championship will smile home with medals, trophies, squash kits and cash prizes.
