Rivers United rode over Al Nasr Benghazi of Libya in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup playoff in Port harcourt courtesy of a five star performance to win 5-0.
Rivers United had dropped down to the Confederations Cup after a 6-0 pummeling in Morocco against Wydad AC but coach Stanley Eguma believed that was the driving force behind the team’s performance yesterday.
“I want to commend the players. It was a good and sweet victory. We planned for this victory after our sad experience in Morocco and we knew we had to put in enough beyond our capacity to cross the hurdles and today the players have proven that we worked well”, Eguma told Sports247.
The coach also commended the opponents for coming to the party but believed it wasn’t for long as his side took the lead in the first half and will quickly turn their attention now to the reverse fixture.
“Our opponents showed good flashes from the start, good team play but it didn’t last long as we went straight into our tactical plans,” he said.
“The players played to instruction and for a fact, the sad incident in Morocco was a tonic that made them to work harder to achieve this victory. It’s not over, the first hurdle is done and we’re looking forward to the next game”, Eguma concluded.
