Osun United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Sporting Lagos in an exciting Matchday 10 clash at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.
The win strengthens their push for a promotion playoff spot in the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Despite early missed opportunities, Osun United took control in the first half. Emmanuel Essien broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a precise cross from the lively Naheem Odugbemi.
Just ten minutes later, the league’s top scorer, Ganiyu Gberefun, doubled the lead with a composed finish after dispossessing a defender, bringing his goal tally to six for the season.
Sporting Lagos responded with a spirited second-half performance, putting Osun United under pressure.
In the closing moments, a controversial penalty awarded to the hosts allowed them to pull one back, but they failed to find an equalizer.
Osun United had a chance to extend their lead late in the game when substitute Olateju Robiu’s effort from a diagonal position was deflected to safety, with fellow substitute Samuel Adeniyi left unmarked.
However, the team held on to secure all three points.
With this victory, ‘The Gladiators’ maintain their strong league momentum. They now shift focus to the Osun State Federation Cup semi-final, where they will face Nationwide League One side, Ijesha Golden Warriors, on Wednesday, February 19, at 10 AM at Ejigbo Township Stadium.
