Female table tennis star, Funke Oshonaike has disclosed that she is ready to take up a coaching job in Nigeria after retirement, but said it would be only for ladies and she will not work for free.
Sports247.ng reports that Oshonaike, who is competing for Akwa Ibom State at the 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja, said she will retire after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan then think of taking up a job back home.
She disclosed that she is already mixing coaching with playing in Germany, but would love to take up the task of training young Nigerian girls fully once she finally drops the ping pong bat.
The 44-year-old Oshonaike admitted she wants to be at Tokyo 2020, in order to go down in history as the only African female to participate in seven editions of the Olympics.
The 2007 Algeria All Africa Games gold medalist said she opted to feature at the sports festival to add glamour to the competition and pointed out that she always wants to give something back to the nation.
Oshonaike added: “Upon retirement, I could take up a coaching job in Nigeria and train the ladies; only if they can pay me; because that’s the same thing I do in Germany.
“If I qualify for Tokyo 2020, I am really going to thank God, because I am going to be the only female in Africa that has been to seven Olympics.
“Thereafter, I would retire. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be my last international outing.
“I intend to retire after the Games and be a coach of the Nigerian team for the right price.”
