The Nigerian women’s national team resumes competitive football after over a year of inactivity when they face CSKA Moscow Women on Thursday, Feb 18 for their opener in the on going Gold City Tournament in Turkey.
The tournament also serves as the first test of new head coach Randy Waldrum, the American appointed in October last year.
Captain of the side, Asisat Oshoala who plays for FC Barcelona Women at club level is elated to be with the group once again after a long time apart.
The prolific forward discussed the good feelings in the camp, the Super Falcons’ chances at the tournament and she hopes things get better for the group.
“The couple of days spent with the coach here in turkey has been pretty much interesting,” Oshoala told the media.
“Not a bad experience, having a new coach, having to come back with the national team after almost two years being apart. It’s been a very good feeling being with the girls again. Pretty much interesting period as well.”
“The tournament here in Turkey we really do hope we can do well.
“We have the opportunity to compete again with the other countries and some other football clubs as well.
Oshoala promised that the Falcons will give their all whenever they step out onto the pitch. The four-time African women’s player of the year winner also speaks enthusiastically about what she hopes are better times ahead for the team.
“Its just the first step in 2021, hopefully it gets better this year.
“You know, just to get the team going instead of staying months or whatever without playing any games. Hopefully the team will get better and also in terms of welfare we hope we get better as well.” she added.
