Chairman Technical Committee of Lagos State Football Association, Dotun Coker has reacted to the ouster of the Super Falconets in the ongoing 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup taking place in Costa Rica.
Nigeria Falconets early Monday morning crashed out in the quarter-final of the tournament following their 0-2 defeat against the Netherlands in the quarter-final. Prior to their match against the Netherlands, Falconets won all their three matches in the group stage before they bowed out from the biannual tournament.
Coker in a chat with sports247.ng expressed disappointment over the team’s defeat and blamed Falconets players for playing the individual games and starting long-range shots that could not go beyond the goalkeeper.
“Individual brilliance by the players upfront made us lose the match. The players abandoned their team play during the group phase and started long-range shots that could not go past through into the goal net.
“I expected the coaches to correct this obvious pattern of play but this style continued unabated and it was unfortunate that with our unbeaten record in the group stage, we could not go beyond the quarter-final stage. Having said this we should also commend the girls for beating the likes of France, Korea, and Canada on the group stage. It is very sad that they lost out in the quarter-final stage of the competition,” he said.
