Onumonu’s Poor Performance Defended By Coach Waldrum

Coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Randy Waldrum has come out to defend under-fire Super Falcons player, Ifeoma Onumonu for her below performance display in last Monday’s outing with the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco.

The Super Falcons earlier suffered an early withdrawal of star striker Asisat Oshoala due to injury as she was flown back to Spain and a lot has been on the shoulders of the 28-year-old player ever since she started leading the attack alone.

Waldrum who has failed to lead the Falcons to their 10th continental title has put in a word for his star striker who many considered made a disappointing display and told why she didn’t leave up to the fan’s expectations in the encounter that saw the Falcons going down by two men. Onumonu’s penalty miss also led to the loss to the North American host.

Speaking after the match, Waldrum defended Onumonu saying that she had been struggling due to some factors that are beyond her control in the game. “I don’t know how she struggled, but the way the game played out, she was stranded a lot by herself and she didn’t get any support coming but if you look at the previous games, she has been very effective forward. We had to find ways to get her the balls but I think she has done well in the tournament”.

The Super Falcons could not make their way to the final of the WAFCON which would have put them in a good position to win their 10th WAFCON title. The Falcons though have qualified for the world cup with a semi-final finish but it’s vivid that other African countries are fast catching up with the Super Falcons of Nigeria.
