Onuachu Handed Late Call Up To Super Eagles Squad For AFCON Qualifiers Against Benin, Lesotho

Paul Onuachu

KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu has been handed a call-up for Nigeria’s 2021 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho later this month, reports Sports247.

The 26-year-old will replace Nantes’ Moses Simon who is prohibited by his club from traveling outside Europe for national team duty due to French policies as regards Covid-19.

An official statement from the Nigerian Football Federation Twitter handle reads:

“Following the uncertainty regarding the availability of players based in France (due to COVID 19 laws guiding the country), Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has extended invitation to KRC Genk striker Paul Onuachu. Henry Onyekuru was earlier called up to replace injured Samuel Kalu.”

Onuachu was surprisingly omitted from the initial 23-man list despite his fine form in Belgium where he has scored 27 goals in all competitions for Genk this season.

The forward will be looking to add to his nine caps when the Super Eagles take on Benin on March 27th before hosting Lesotho three days later.
