Super Falcons co-captain Onome Ebi has praised the effort of the team and contribution of the head coach Thomas Dennerby in ensuring that the team bounced back from their poor start to the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana to becoming the first team in Africa to qualify for the 2019 FIFA Women World Cup in France.
Nigeria beat in form Cameroon on Tuesday in Accra to book a ticket to the final where they’ll face the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in a replay of their opening match of the tournament which the ladies from South Africa shockingly won by a goal to nil.
The team heavily criticized for their poor finishing abilities in the first game bounced back to trash Zambia 4 – 0 in the second match before humbling two time champions Equatorial Guinea 6 – 0 to book a semi final ticket against Cameroon.
Reacting to Nigeria booking her ticket to France for the 2019 Women World Cup, Ebi took to her Instagram handle to share her thoughts on the ongoing tournament. “We didn’t start the competition as well as we would have liked but we were determined to prove doubters wrong and not only defend our title by getting to the final but also to ensure our qualification for France 2019.
The team responded very well after our first loss in the group stages and kept our belief that we would make it to the final.
I have to mention our semi-final opponents, Cameroon. Like the finals in 2016, it was a hard and competitive match against a very well organised team. They made it difficult for us to play our game and shows why they must always be respected.
Thank you to all the fans that have continued to get behind us. We shall go into the finals with confidence and knowing you are with us.
Nigeria will once again face South in the final of the AWCON billed for Saturday December 1st in Accra.
