For the first time after twenty years of participation in the tournament organised for Club tennis teams in the east of the Niger, Onitsha sports club claimed it’s first title.
The superfinals of the tournament hosted by STDC Owerri and sponsored by Cutix Plc, lived up to expection as the commercial city team who defeated 2017 champions Aba Sports Club in the semi finals by 4-1 showed their seriousness early in the game when Spencer Umorem defeated Buchi Ochije.
Buchi who had in the previous day created the greatest upset of the 21 years tounament by defeating the hitherto undisputed champion of the tournament Perez Ateh by two straight sets.
in the semi finals he was defeated by Spencer Umoren by two straight sets with the trustee of the league Mr Emeka Azie as umpire doing great work in the high tempered match.
With Orlu taking the first doubles the die was cast on court four where the second doubles was held.
the captain of Onitsha sports club, Agusiobo Chiedu paired by Wahab Adamu who has lead his team in the tournament from the beginning of the extravaganza gave Onitsha the lead with two to one set victory, all attention shifted to court one where Ejike Akpu was in action as he rapped up this game to hand the crucial victory to the commercial city team.
In the veteran’s game, Orlu’s Prof Ukabala and partner were in action against the pair of the Chairman ENIC tennis board of trustees, Chief Pius Nweke and Chukwuka egbosiuba, all of whom were a delight to watch as they demonstrated the intelligent aspect of tennis to the delight of spectectors who came from across the country for the tournament.
Orlu won the veteran’s doubles to settle it at 3-2 victory for Onitsha, this was to the admiration of all great tennis lovers which included the chairman and CEO Cutix plc Amb. Odi Nwosu, who celebrated the birth of new era in the world of Club’s tennis in the country.
