Nigeria Professional Football League side, Sunshine Stars of Akure defeated city rivals and Nationwide League One(NLO) club, Akure City Academy to win the 2022 Ondo State FA Cup title on Wednesday morning Sports247 Nigeria can confirm.
Twenty teams started the 2022 edition of the competition but it was Sunshine Stars and Akure City, both who joined the tournament in the quarter finals due to being drawn bye as the top two from the competition last year.
Sunshine Stars had a comfortable 4-1 win over Ekimogun F.C in the semifinal to book their place in the final while Akure City Academy beat Sunshine Stars Team B 4:3 on penalties in the semifinal to set up a final showdown against their main team.
The final which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, 14th June, 2022 but was shifted to this morning due to heavy downpour in Akure, began with first half ending stalemate as neither of the two teams could break each other’s defense line.
Finally, Sunshine Stars had a breakthrough in the 65th minute when Azeez Ajagbe’s low drive into the bottom corner put the Owena Waves in the lead.
Sunday Abe doubled the lead for Sunshine in the 92nd minute from a well-taken freekick helped in by the framework before Akure City got a consolation a minute later to hand Sunshine Stars a 2-1 victory and the 2022 Ondo FA Cup trophyat the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.
Sunshine Stars earned the bragging right of being the best team in the state and will now represent the state at the 2022 National Aiteo FA Cup finals later this year.
