Omeruo Joins Nigeria’s Escalating Injury List

Leganes of Spain defender, Kenneth Omeruo on Saturday joined the growing list of Nigerian players who are copping injuries this month, as sports247.ng learnt he limped out of action with his La Liga club.

Before now, two players who part of those invited for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya, Eddy Ogenyi Onazi and Shehu Abdullahi were injured during national team duty, while a third, Henry Onyekuru returned to his club, Glatasaray of Turkey with a complaint, after which former national team winger, Imoh Ezekiel was also declared injured.

Following the tail is now Omeruo, who got his second match but first start for Leganes in their 1-1 draw with Valencia at Estadio de Mestalla on Saturday evening, but limped off the field in the 70th minute.

Incidentally, Omeruo made his first appearance in the Spanish top-flight just before the last international break in a 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano, after replacing injured Unai Bustinza just before the half-hour, but has suffered the same blight and was replaced by Raúl García.

Omeruo, who is on loan from Chelsea of England, was on the bench in Nigeria’s 4-0 hammering of Libya last weekend, but was not included in the squad for the second leg in Sfax, Tunisia.

Prior to his injury enforced substitution on Saturday, he had six clearances and passing rate of 94.7 percent, as he helped Leganes lead 1-0 courtesy of Gerard Gumbau’s 63rd minute goal.
