Oman and Kenya are the latest teams to confirm their participation in the 2024 Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup, scheduled to take place on December 14-15 at Charterhouse Lagos.
This historic event marks the first time a Fencing World Cup will be held in Sub-Saharan Africa, sanctioned by the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
Oman, represented by Al Harith Salim and his coach, registered just days before the tournament.
Their goal is to bolster their international rankings in a competitive field. Kenya, meanwhile, brings a 12-man team to Lagos as part of their strategic buildup to the 2025 Africa Cup, also set to take place in Lagos.
The East African nation joins a diverse roster of countries, including Benin Republic, Togo, Greece, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and host nation Nigeria. Egypt, regarded as Africa’s fencing powerhouse, will field a formidable eight-man team led by world champion Mahmoud Elsayed.
“The competition is crucial to both my world ranking and my position with the Egyptian national fencing team,” Elsayed stated.
The tournament represents a significant milestone for Nigeria as Charterhouse Lagos hosts its first international sports event. Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, expressed excitement about the competition.
“Months of preparation will be put to the test as we welcome the world to Lagos. This event will inspire our youth and elevate the sport’s profile in Nigeria.”
As Lagos gears up to welcome some of the finest young fencers globally, the anticipation is palpable.
The event promises thrilling action while fostering development and interest in fencing across the region.
