Veteran football administrator Samuel Columbus Omamofe has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a forward-thinking coach for the Super Eagles and invest in long-term development strategies.
Omamofe made this call following the departure of Jose Peseiro, who led Nigeria to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final. With interim coach Austin Eguavoen successfully securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON, Omamofe emphasized the need for a lasting solution.
Reflecting on past successes under coaches like Clemens Westerhof and Bonfrere Jo, Omamofe highlighted the role of visionary leadership and government support in building a dominant national team.
“Football development is like a marathon — it takes time. We need a coach with a 4-5 year progressive plan,” he stated.
Omamofe also expressed concerns about the state of Nigerian club football, pointing to Enyimba’s struggles in the CAF Confederation Cup as a reflection of deeper structural issues.
He called for a return to grassroots football programs like the Principals Cup and advocated for greater private sector investment in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
“Nigerian football must adapt to global standards. Football is a multi-billion-dollar business, and private investors like Hon. Kunle Soname have shown the way forward,” Omamofe concluded.
