National Sports Festival men’s squash gold medalist, Abdulrahman Olanrewaju has recounted how early tips he got in the sports from former star player, Yusuf Durosinlorun helped him master the game.
Sports247.ng reports that Olanrewaju is still grateful to the tutoring and mentoring he received from Durosinlorun, after relocating from Ilorin to Lagos in 2015.
Olarenwaju, who earlier trained alongside Babatunde Ajagbe, recounts how he attended two past editions of the sports festival with high hopes of hitting gold, only to fall short under fishy conditions.
However, after eventually getting his desired squash gold medal at Abuja 2018, Olanrewaju is standing tall and looking ahead for greater exploits in years to come.
After defeating Wale Amao 2-1 in the final, Olanrewaju recalled that he lost to the same opponent in the quarter-finals of the 2012 edition in Lagos.
Olanrewaju stated: “I feel so excited winning both the singles and team Gold medals at the 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja.
“It is a dream achieved; I have participated in two different National Sports Festivals, in Kaduna and Lagos.
“My team got to semi finals at the Kada games and due to some anomalies we were deprive of the team medal.
“At the Eko 2012, I lost to the eventual winner of the tournament Wale Amao at the quarter final stage.
“I moved to Lagos in 2015 after my National Youth Service Corps and since then I have been trying to improve my Squash every blessed day.
“I learnt the basics of squash in Ilorin, my home town. When I got to Lagos, I had to learn from different people.
“Yusuf Durosinlorun (was one of those) who happened to see through the development of my game at a certain level.”
