The 7th Okpekpe International Road Race is scheduled to hold on May 25, ahead of which registration has officially been declared open.
Sports247.ng gathered that this confirmation comes after the date was approved by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Association of International Marathons & Distance Races (AIMS).
Kenya’s Kibet Alex won the 2018 men’s title, while Ethiopia’s Yani Dera Dida emerged best woman in the race that holds in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government of Edo State, about 25 kilometres northeast of Auchi.
Spokesman of the race, Dare Esans said it has also been recognised as the only road race in West Africa with a silver label status and only one certified by AIMS in the sub-region of Africa.
He added that the elevated status granted Okpekpe 10km Race meant it was qualified to be listed in the calendar of both the IAAF and AIMS.
Esan added: “The race is not only for professional athletes, who want to run for the prize monies on offer or to improve on their times for ranking purposes, it is also open to people who want to run for fun or for charity.
“We are delighted to announce that intending runners at the seventh edition can also use our tracking application to register for the race.
“For quick and easy registration, intending runners for all categories can download the tracking application launched for the race in 2017 or visit the website www.okpekperoadrace.com to register.”
