This year’s Nigerian Cup promises to be the best so fay despite the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the head of the planning committee, Dr. Michelson Okoro, has said.
The Nigeria Cup is an annual golf competition designed by the golf section of Ikoyi Club to celebrate the nation’s Independence anniversary.
Commending Polaris Bank for its huge support towards this year’s edition, Dr. Michelson Okoro, who doubles as the vice-captain of the club, allayed fears surrounding the hosting of one of the biggest golf tournament, saying the stage is set for the event billed for October 1.
Speaking at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) at the weekend, Dr. Okoro said, “Many people believe we might not have the annual event this year because of the pandemic outbreak. But I said no, that is not in tandem with the spirit of my doing things; that as far as I am concerned, we will have the Nigerian Cup, and I am bold to say that Polaris Bank has supported the tournament with N20 million.”
Elated that the bank still supported the event when other sponsors became evasive due to the negative impact of COVID-19 on the economy, Okoro said,
“It takes courage for any corporate outfit to do what they have done for the golfing community.”
Okoro pledged that participants would be treated to the best of golf laced with all the usual razzmatazz associated with the annual Nigerian Cup.
“We will adhere strictly to the Nigeria Center for Diseases Control’s (NCDC) protocol on the fight against COVID-19 during the tournament, but such will not take the shine off the big golf tournament this year,” the real estate player said.
