The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced the completion of the allocation of 100 hectares of land at Ode-Omi in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area for the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard by the Nigerian Navy.
Speaking during a meeting with Rear Admiral Mike Oamen, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, at his Oke-Mosan office in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun revealed that all fees and charges, amounting to several billion naira, have been waived.
He also confirmed that the Certificate of Occupancy for the site has been forwarded to Naval headquarters.
“In light of anticipated activities in our riverine areas, the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, supported the need for a naval presence in Ogun State,” the Governor stated.
“Following a joint effort by the Nigerian Navy and the state government, a suitable location in Ogun Waterside was identified and allocated.”
Governor Abiodun disclosed that the access road to the site will be ready by the end of the week, with preparations underway for the groundbreaking ceremony.
He emphasized the strategic importance of a naval presence to enhance security and safeguard the state’s emerging economic opportunities.
Ogun State, being a coastal region with assets like Tongeji Island and the Olokola Deep Sea Port, holds significant prospects for oil production.
Governor Abiodun highlighted recent progress in this area, including a visit by the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission and the NNPCL, which declared Ogun a frontier oil-producing state.
Rear Admiral Oamen commended the Governor for prioritizing security and supporting the Nigerian Navy.
He assured that the Navy is committed to securing Ogun’s maritime spaces and ensuring the safety of its waterways and creeks.
