Preparations are now complete for the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as Governor Dapo Abiodun conducted another inspection tour of the facilities scheduled to host the event.
During Thursday’s tour, Governor Abiodun assessed key venues, including the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, handball courts, and the Alake Sports Centre, affirming the state’s readiness for the festival.

The governor noted that the newly upgraded facilities are not only for the upcoming festival but will also serve future national and international competitions.
He revealed that the MKO Abiola International Stadium, currently undergoing renovation, has already been selected by the African Athletics Federation to host the Under-20 Athletics Championship in 2026, thanks to the high-quality tracks recently installed.
Abiodun emphasized that, moving forward, the stadium will be reserved exclusively for sporting activities. To accommodate non-sporting events, a separate pavilion is being constructed behind the stadium.
“All non-sporting events—such as rallies, parties, and national celebrations—will now be held at the new pavilion, while the stadium remains strictly for sports,” the governor stated.
He also announced plans to officially rename the facility to the MKO Abiola Sporting Complex, highlighting the transformation and elevated status of the venue.
The governor disclosed that approximately 15,000 visitors are expected during the festival, noting preparations are underway to ready tourist attractions such as Olumo Rock for the influx. He highlighted the potential economic boost for local businesses and the hospitality sector.
“This festival will generate significant economic activity—from transport to hospitality and tourism. The ripple effects will be strongly felt across the state,” he said.
Governor Abiodun concluded by stressing the importance of the festival in talent discovery and national sports development, noting that Ogun State’s investments in sports infrastructure are now among the best in Nigeria.
