Among the key laws enacted are the Ogun State House of Assembly Legislative Funds Management and Related Matters Law, 2023, the Ogun State Power Sector Law, 2024, the Ogun State Rural and Semi-Urban Integration and Development Law, 2023, and the Ogun State Consumer Protection Law, 2024.
Speaking to journalists on the Assembly’s progress since the leadership transition, Elemide recalled that he assumed office as Speaker on January 30, 2024, following the impeachment of Olakunle Oluomo by 18 out of 26 lawmakers. Oluomo was removed over allegations of gross misconduct, high-handedness, lack of transparency, financial misappropriation, and pursuit of personal interests.
Addressing the media at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Elemide revealed that the Assembly had received over 90 petitions, with land grabbing being the most frequent complaint among constituents. In response, the Assembly passed the Anti-Land Grabbing Bill, now signed into law, and urged security agencies to ensure swift prosecution of offenders.
Stressing the legislature’s pivotal role in democracy, the Speaker emphasized the need for cooperation between government arms, crediting the Assembly’s strong relationship with the executive for fostering development in Ogun State.
Elemide also commended his colleagues for their support, citing Sections 91 and 92 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empower the House of Assembly to determine its leadership structure for effective governance.
On security issues, particularly herder-farmer conflicts arising from open grazing, he confirmed the passage of the Anti-Open Grazing Bill and called for strict enforcement by security agencies to curb violations.
