Former president of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief (Evangelist) Solomon Ogba JP has thrown more light on the forthcoming maiden ultra-marathon race in the country.
Speaking in his new position as president of International Association of Ultra Marathon Race in Africa, Ogba said the inaugural edition, billed for Remo, Ogun State in December, will create new frontiers for the nation.
Ogba, who also played a key role in Nigeria’s first ever appearance at the Winter Olympics in 2017, added that ultra-marathon is more than a long distance race, as it takes the runners into the countryside.
Ogba, who is also first vice-president of Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) added that, apart from the 60km race for men and women, there will be 10km and 5km races meant showcase Remo Kingdom, with the finish point at Sagamu International Stadium.
He further disclosed that the race, which will be sponsored by Kunle Soname, the chairman of Bet9ja, has been approved as an African Challenge, where top marathoners would compete for the grand prizes.
The approval, according to Ogba, was given by the world president of the body, Professor Nadean Kahn, at a meeting with Soname last weekend.
Ogba added, “The Ultra Marathon is held in the rural areas. With time, the world federation will pick a date in December for the Remo event.
“A delegation of some African countries led by the world president met with Soname on Friday, where the decision was taken.
“It was at this meeting that, Nilayo Sports Management Limited, owned by Bukola Olopade, was appointed in charge of marketing and branding for the Remo International Ultra Marathon Race.”
