Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has charged Delta State to keep up its leading efforts in sports activities and maintenance of facilities, sports247.ng reports.
Obasanjo said as much during the official commissioning of Stephen Keshi Stadium, in which the former president expressed amazement over the quality of the facilities on offer and charge the state to use the edifice to the best use for sports talents.
‘OBJ’ made his views known on Monday, while commissioning the 23, 000 capacity stadium in Asaba.
He opined that the edifice will help Delta State continue with its streaks in national sporting activities.
Excited with the quality of projects seen, Obasanjo danced in the full glare of large spectators and Asaba traditional council of chiefs.
While commending Governor Okowa for constructing such an edifice, Obasanjo added that the stadium is also a spot for people to exercise.
He also observed that the stadium would boost the state’s economy and urged Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to add hostel facilities in the arena.
Obasanjo noted that hostels would allow people to live in the stadium premises and have opportunities of training round the clock, as they would be closer to the facilities and enable them become world champs.
The former president added: “Whoever you are, whatever age you are, you must exercise, you must be fit.
“We must catch them young, we have the facilities, we have to recruit those who will win, train them from young age.
“Build a hostel where people will train day and night and they will be going to school from the stadium and in whatever sports, Delta State will be the best.”
