The chief coaches of Sunshine Queens, Wemimo Matthew and that of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon, have vowed not to leave Lagos empty handed without taking home the third place title back to their base in Akure and Port Harcourt respectively.
Sunshine Queens Manager, Wemimo Matthew, told her players not to relent in their efforts to defeat the very mobile Rivers Angels’ team in Sunday’s losers’ final, so as to finish third best in the women’s elite league.
The Owena Mermaids dominated most of the play in the NWPL Super 4 opener against Bayelsa Queens but failed to score when it matters most.
An unhappy Wemimo felt her team dominated with more possession but the result didn’t reflect what really happened at the game against Bayelsa.
Speaking to the NWFL Media, the former Super Falcons player thought the game should have been won by her side.
“We played a difficult game on Friday and i felt we should have won the game. We had more possession and needed to be more composed in front of goal against Bayelsa. We can not be complacent in front of goal if we must win the third place title.
” If we had converted a goal or two against Bayelsa, it would have inspired us.
“We’ve got to do better in front of goal in our next game against Rivers Angels. I just want my players to relax and am sure everything will come to place. She concluded.
On his own, Rivers Angels Head Coach, Edwin Okon, still feels the third place game against Sunshine Queens on Sunday is an important one for his side to win.
The ‘Pride of Rivers’ disappointedly lost 5-4 via penalties to bitter rivals Nasarawa Amazons and Okon feels his side should have doubled up their goal chances before letting their opponent score a goal.
” Yes, we lost against Nasarawa Amazons, a game we threw away many goalscoring chances and now we find ourselves playing the loser’s final against Sunshine Queens.
” We have to forget about our loss to Nasarawa and think about the game on Sunday. It’s still something massively to play for, and we will give our best shot.
“We still have a very important job come on Sunday to finish third and not fourth. It should be a difficult game because Sunshine Queens will also want to win. If we want to win, then we need to forget about the Nasarawa game.” He concluded.
