The Nigeria Women’s Football League, NWFL was dragged back to the shameful days as coach of Rivers Angels Edwin Okon see nothing wrong in his player’s attack on the center referee Mr. Nurudeem in a group game between Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens in the ongoing Nigeria women football league Super six tournament, where Rivers Angels 96+1 minute goal was ruled out as goal kick by the center referee.
But the players of Rivers Angels went out of their way after the decision of the NWFL match officials, in the presence of top dignitaries at the Stephen Keshi stadium, which includes the Chief Operating Officer Coo, of the Female league, Module Shabi, former President Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Solomon Ogba, the Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa and other members of the Nigeria Football Federation and Referees Association.
While reacting to a question in an interview session, Coach Okon said it is not out of place for his players to publicly and physically attack the male center referee because the players acted on their emotions after the game ended.
The former Nigeria national team female coach expressed disappointment over the match officiating, saying the women league will lack sponsorship if it continues the way it is.
Rivers Angels have lost three out of four games against Bayelsa Queens in their last meetings.
However, the league body has suspended Adjei Charlotte the Ghanaian goalkeeper who led the attack, and Hassan Suliat from the 3rd place match between Confluence Queens and Rivers Angels FC plus a fine of one million naira on the Rivers Angels team.
