Former Super Falcons’ star, Stella Mbachu has decried the current situation in which there is no corporate title sponsor for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
Speaking in an interview with Sports 247 on the sidelines of the ongoing NWFL Super-6 at Samson Siasia Stadium in Bayelsa State’s capital, Yenagoa, Mbachu recounted how corporate bodies flooded the female league in years past.

The former hard-working player, who is now in the coaching crew of Heartland Queens of Owerri, pointed out that the absence of new discoveries in the Nigerian women’s football scene is simply because motivation is not coming from the corporate sector.
She, however, commended organisers of the NWFL Super-6 for putting together a contest that she rated high in quality of play, officiating and other aspects.
Mbachu opined, “It’s a great competition for women and the ladies. This is the highest of the highest competitions for the female sides. It’s very good.
“Every team here and every player are showcasing their talents. It’s very good and it’s going well.
“The growth of female football in Nigeria is expanding. It’s growing, but what I’m not happy with is sponsorship. It is not going well.
“Compare before and now; you will see that we don’t have sponsorship any longer. Before we had Pepsi, we had Indomie and many others making everything go well.
“Talents were coming out every year, every second, but now, maybe due to lack of sponsorship, we cannot see a bunch of new players coming up. That’s where I don’t like the current state of the women’s league.”
