NWFL SUPER-6: How Pidgin Slang Propelled Edo Queens To Women’s League Title – Suliyat Abideen

Edo Queens of Benin City’s most enterprising player at this year’s Nigerian Women Football League (NWFL) Super-6, Suliat Abideen has revealed how slang in pidgin English helped her team clinch the title.

A sensational 1-1 draw with the host team, Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa, was sufficient for the title on Sunday as fellow contenders, Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt, got the same result versus Heartland Queens of Owerri.

Suliyat, who had earlier been named into the NWFL regular season star-11 and emerged best midfielder of the league, disclosed that ‘we no go gree’ is the slang that propelled the Benin City side to the title.

Abideen also revealed how surprised she was being named most valuable player of the Super-6, considering that she already had the earlier double-recognition to cherish.

“I was not expecting this,” she began, “I had already emerged as a midfielder of the season and was listed in the best 11 teams, but I did not expect this one.

“This award will boost my morale, and I thank everybody who helped me achieve it. I also thank those who voted for me to be MVP of this season.”

She went on to reveal lessons learnt by herself and the entire team, considering that they were not rated as favourites to lift the trophy in Yenagoa.

“I’ve learned from this Super-6 that you just have to believe in yourself. Nobody believed in us, but we did it. Coming here and winning this Super 6 is something big for us.

“It confirms the value of our slang… we no go gree. Those words motivated us to go all out to get the trophy.

“We no dey gree for anybody is what we always say. We believed we could do it, and it helped us a lot,” Abideen concluded.
