After a general one day rest, action resumes Friday in the ongoing Super 6 Nigeria Women Football League Championship with two very interesting fixtures on the card.
Defending Champions Bayelsa Queens and Edo Queens have both found themselves working on tight ropes after their day 1 round of matches and both teams are now condemned to win today if they hoped to play in the final which has been fixed for Sunday.
Starting out against FC Robo last Wednesday, the Bayelsa team had to rely on a Sebastian Flourish individual brilliance to achieve a slim 1-0 win over the hard fighting Lagos side, a result which left the CAF Champions League Bronze winning team in 2nd place in the group behind leaders Rivers Angels. The Port Harcourt based side had beaten FC Robo 2-0 on the opening day of the competition.
It is a fact that a winner takes all encounter lies ahead but in the possible situation that the Bayelsa Queens vs Rivers Angels match ends in a draw, it automatically means that Bayelsa Queens have been dethroned as league champions and stopped from making the CAF Champions League appearance back to back on goals aggregate allowing Rivers Angels progression to the final of the Championship.
In Group B, Edo Queens are in a compounded situation as they are not only up against their sisters and host in Delta Queens, they are also fighting an invisible but present enemy in Confluence Queens of Kogi, whose fate also depends on the outcome of this evening’s game.
The only reason why Confluence Queens are not yet back home like FC Robo of Lagos is that they achieved a spirited 1-0 win over Edo Queens in their last game, a result not big enough to put them in contention for the final but good enough to see them through to the 3rd place game incase today’s match between Edo Queens and Delta Queens ends in a draw.
Delta Queens do not necessarily have to win to make the final but they must avoid a defeat by a 2 goal margin otherwise, the Edo ladies will just be on their way to a first ever final place appearance in the Women Super 6 Championship.
The Moses Aduku led Edo Queens have got their work cut out but while it looks improbable, it is not unachievable to beat Delta Queens by a 2-goal margin to progress to the final destination.
The two fate deciding games will be played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba by 10am and 4pm respectively on Friday.
