Sunshine Queens of Akure head coach Wemimo Olanrewaju Matthew has attributed not playing to instruction by her girls as the major reason why they failed to get a win against Bayelsa Queens in their elimination match at the ongoing 2019 Nigeria Women Football League Super Four tournament at the Agege stadium in Lagos.
The ladies from Akure dominated early proceedings of the game but were unable to capitalize on their advantage. The coach revealed to Sports247.ng that their aim was to contend for the trophy and the defeat is disappointing to their goal; “I’m not happy for losing. Our aim of coming here was to come and win the Super 4 but that’s the result so I’m not happy about it.
Our problem was the coordination among the players in terms of their movement. We play the 4-4-2 formation the instruction when they lose the ball was to have the wingers fall back but they failed to do that in the entire duration of the match.”
Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper Alaba Jonathan made a couple of saves in the encounter which ensured that the Restoration girls got all three points which qualified them for Sunday’s showdown and coach Wemimo Matthews has confirmed that her impact in the game was well felt. “I can say we played against the goalkeeper. We tried to score but she was up to the task every time we attacked. She did really well.”
The game’s deciding goal was scored by Falconets forward Reuben Charity in the 45th minute of the encounter while the team will not have the services of Anibaba Ayomide in the final after she was red carded in the second half of the match.
