The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) is set for transformative growth following the resolutions adopted at its 2024 Annual General Assembly (AGA), held on December 17, 2024, in Abuja.
Stakeholders unanimously agreed to ambitious expansion plans and structural changes proposed by the league board, aimed at elevating women’s football across Nigeria.

Board’s Vision for Expansion
Central to the discussions was the board’s proposal to increase the number of teams in the NWFL Premiership from 16 to 20, beginning in the 2025/2026 season. This move reflects a deliberate effort to broaden participation, provide more opportunities for players, and enhance the league’s competitiveness.
Additionally, the NWFL reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a 20-club format in the Championship while operationalizing the long-anticipated States League as the third tier of the league structure.
This States League will commence in the 2024/2025 season, acting as a feeder system to sustain a pipeline of talent for higher tiers.
Nkechi Obi, the Chairperson of the NWFL Board, emphasized that the expansion aligns with the league’s broader mission to systematically develop women’s football. “This is not just about increasing numbers but building a sustainable framework for the professional growth of women footballers in Nigeria,” she said.
Stakeholder Endorsement
Congress members and stakeholders enthusiastically endorsed the board’s vision, highlighting its potential to unlock new opportunities for clubs, players, and communities. They agreed that the three-tier structure would ensure inclusivity and create pathways for grassroots players to rise to professional levels.
“Expanding the Premiership and introducing the States League is a game-changer,” said Robin Apreala, Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee. “It shows the NWFL’s commitment to building a comprehensive ecosystem for women’s football in Nigeria.”
Implementation Committees and Modalities
To ensure the success of these reforms, stakeholders approved the formation of several committees, including the States League Committee, Marketing and Communication Committee, Premiership Super 6 Committee, and Championship Committee. These groups will oversee the rollout and monitor the impact of the new league structure.
The Congress also resolved that detailed implementation modalities for the expanded Premiership and new States League would be shared before the 2024/2025 season kicks off.
Retained Formats and Immediate Actions
In the interim, the Congress resolved to retain the two-group league format for the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season, ensuring a smooth transition before the expansion.
The season is set to begin on January 15, 2025, with an opening Star Match between Edo Queens and Abia Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
