Sunshine Queens FC of Akure on Wednesday conceded a late penalty that earned Osun Babes a 1-0 win in matchday 7 of the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership.
In the match played at the Osogbo Township Stadium, Osogbo had Sunshine Queens’ perceived goal disallowed by the center referee in the 13th minute for an infringement on the home team’s player in the box.
Sunshine Queens, which were the better side in the first half had several chances that were not converted, especially towards the end of the first half, for the game to end goalless into the half.
In the 53rd minute Sunshine Queens forward, Oluwaseun Fakunle rattled the right-hand corner of the bar from a well-played freekick from twenty yards out.
A late surge by the home team to score in the normal time were met with stiff resistance by the visitors.
However, in the added time of 90th minute, Sunshine Queens conceded a late penalty and was converted by Kafayat Bashiru for the game to end 1-0.
the First Assistant Coach of Sunshine Queens, Niyi John said he was disappointed that his team could not get a point from the encounter.
“We were expecting maximum point, we really want to win and we want to do well the penalty was unexpected, but we will go back to the drawing board,” he said.
Also, Head Coach of Osun Babes, Yinka Adunola, in her post-match interview, said her girls played to the style of the visitors in the first half and was responsible for her team’s lack of cutting edge.
Adunola said she told her players to put the ball on the ground to which she said led to the turn around of her team’s great performance in the second half and helped win the game.
