Less fancied Papa Soccer Angels of Lagos are determined to upstage two former top-flight clubs in the chase of promotion tickets to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
This was boldly declared by the youthful club’s coach, Michael Olamiji, after his side mauled Chosen Generation of Ogun State 5-1 on Sunday.
Speaking to sports247.ng minutes after their second Group B1 game in the ongoing NWFL Championship play-offs at Saint Patrick College, Calabar, Coach Olamiji expressed optimism that his side will qualify ahead of Delta Babes of Asaba and Ibom Angels of Uyo.
He opined that losing 3-0 to Ibom Angels in their first game was a learning point, then thanked God as well as hard work from his players and crew for making Sunday’s victory possible.
After giving thanks for the massive win, Olamiji stressed that they are determined to keep winning all their remaining matches and pick a ticket into the top-flight NWFL.
“Let’s give glory to God for this victory. Let’s also talk about hard work from the players and the technical crew.
“We lost our first match, but we did not relent in our efforts.
“We are determined to ensure that we measure up to standard and the reason why we came here. That’s why they were able to get the victory.
“Definitely, we learnt a lesson from the first match, and it gave us the victory today.
“We looked at all the loopholes, checked all our errors, and we were able to correct them,” Olamiji stated.
He then cast a look at his side’s chances of upsetting Delta Babes in their last group match, as they seek one of only two promotion tickets at stake in The Canaan City.
“In this type of competition, there’s no time for training,” Olamiji assessed.
“Whatever you can say to the players indoors, they should be able to carry out physically and give you the result that you want.
“Every coach in the whole world will always say he is not out to lose.
“As we corrected our mistakes and errors, then got the three points, we will definitely build further on it. We are looking forward to more victories … starting with our next match.”
Victory against Delta Babes would qualify Papa Soccer Angels for a semi-final clash with a team from Group B2, with the winner picking a promotion slot to the NWFL Premiership.
