In a thrilling encounter at Saint Patrick College Field, Calabar, the Gallant Queens secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Kaduna Queens on Matchday 2 of the NWFL Championship 2024, Sports247 reports.
The win was orchestrated by Favour Okafor, whose late heroics left the opposition reeling.
Gallant Queens entered the match with confidence, following their hard-fought 2-1 victory against Wazbak International on Matchday 1. With two slots available for the NWFL Premiership, the pressure was on, but the Gallant Queens showed no signs of nerves.
The first half saw both teams locked in a battle for dominance, with chances coming few and far between. Despite the stalemate, the Gallant Queens remained patient, waiting for the right moment to strike.
That moment came in the 66th minute when Favour Okafor, the star of the day, broke the deadlock. A beautifully timed run allowed her to get behind the Kaduna Queens’ defense, and she calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, sending the Gallant Queens’ supporters into raptures. “I knew I had to make my chances count, and I’m glad I could deliver when it mattered,” Okafor said after the match.
As the game neared its conclusion, Kaduna Queens pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, their efforts left them exposed at the back, and Okafor was ready to capitalize once more. In the dying moments of stoppage time, she struck again, sealing the victory with a composed finish in the 94th minute. “The team worked so hard today, and I’m proud we could secure another win. We’re one step closer to our goal,” Okafor added.
With this victory, the Gallant Queens have firmly established themselves as strong contenders for one of the coveted NWFL Premiership slots. Their focus now shifts to maintaining this momentum as they continue their championship journey.
