Calabar, Nigeria — Castmog Ladies bounced back from their opening day defeat with a crucial 2-0 victory over Heroes Queens on Matchday Two of the NWFL Championship 2024 at UJ Esuene Stadium, Sports247 reports.
Goals from Temitope Dosumu in the 52nd and 89th minutes secured the three points, keeping Castmog Ladies’ hopes of promotion alive in a fiercely competitive Group A1.
After a disappointing start to the tournament, where Castmog Ladies fell 4-2 to First Mahi Babes, they knew a response was necessary to stay within reach of the two promotion slots available.
Facing a Heroes Queens side reeling from a 7-0 thrashing by Imo Striker Queens, Castmog Ladies approached the match with determination and focus.
The first half was a tight affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. However, Castmog Ladies began to assert themselves in the second half, with Dosumu proving to be the difference-maker. Her first goal came just seven minutes after the break, as she capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot the ball past the Heroes Queens’ goalkeeper.
As the match wore on, Heroes Queens tried to find a way back into the game but were consistently thwarted by a resolute Castmog defense. Dosumu sealed the victory in the 89th minute with a clinical finish, putting the game beyond doubt and securing a vital win for her team.
Reflecting on the match, Dosumu said, “We knew how important this game was for our promotion chances. After the first match, we had to show our true character, and I’m glad we did. There’s still a long way to go, but this win gives us the confidence we need moving forward.”
With this victory, Castmog Ladies have revived their promotion hopes. They’ll need to build on this momentum in the coming matches, as only the top two teams in the group will earn a coveted spot in the top tier of Nigerian women’s football.
