NWFL 2022/23 : Edo Queens Crushed Ibom Angels 4 Nil To Secure Super Six Slot

Edo Queens on Wednesday evening secured the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Super Six spot with a 4-0 trashing of Ibom Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

Goals from the Red- hot Godwin Obaseki ladies Fajobi Yetunde, Suliat Abideen, Eunice Godwin and an own goal from Esther Friday were all the Benin-City based Queens needed to book their place for the title contention.

An already relegated and weeping Ibom Angels players showed intent with the first attack of the game which resulted in a free-kick, but the resultant kick went straight into the waiting arms of Nkiruka Obidinma the magnificent ball puncher.

Edo Queens picked the ball and charged up an attack which fell to the path of Eunice Godwin the striker wasted no time in converting her first goal of the campaign.

Edo Queens thought they had made it two minutes later, but the goal was ruled for offside. Four minutes later, Yemisi Samuel, found Edo Queens dangerous and dangling attacker Suliat Abideen, with a pass in the box, the latter shot at goal, but the upright denied her – the rebound was however pushed in by Esther Friday, Ibom Angels defender.

The hosts pushed for more goals with Fajobi Yetunde and Yemisi Samuel coming close to scoring in the 22nd, 24th and 27th minutes, but their brilliant intents yielded no result.

The team’s captain and midfield enforcer, Suliat Abideen again in the 29th minute picked up a fine pass from Omotoke Odueke, and did a fine solo before putting the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Patience David scoring an incredible goal.

The girls completed the goals scoring in the 34th minute when Fajobi Yetunde, made a good count of the team’s fine build-up with a fine goal to compound the woes of the already relegated side.

Both coaches made tactical changes in the second half with coach Moses Aduku throwing in more forwards to add to the goal, but the injection of Kafayat Mafisere, Glory Osaghae, Alice Ogebe and Oluwatosin Ogundeko, but Ibom Angels remained resolute at the back to wad off any threat posed at them.

The game ended the same way the first half ended, but Edo Queens have the Super Six ticket secured ahead of their last matchday 14 Wednesday, April 19th – away to Abia Angels.

Edo Queens now top Group B with 22 points.
